Place of Weeping
It Happened Yesterday

Place of Weeping tells of the harsh iniquities endured by the black farm labourers of a small farming community in Weenen (South Africa). Encountering emotional drama and undignified abuse at the hands of her racist white boss, young Gracie places her life in danger in a personal fight for freedom setting an example for her companions. This was the first antiapartheid film to be distributed in cinemas throughout the country and not only in those reserved for black people.
BIOGRAPHY
DARRELL ROODT Johannesburgh, 1962. Has also signed as Darrell James Roodt some of the eleven films he has made since 1983 following his studies at Witwatersrand University. Place of Weeping (1986), demonstrates his skill as a perspicacious and passionate chronicler of the antiapartheid struggle, a tendency he has continued in other films such as The Stick (1987) and Jobman (1990). He didn't however achieve the same conviction with other kinds of movie such as the musical starring Whoopi Goldberg, Sarafina! (1992).
