In a small New Zealand coastal village, Maori claim descent from Paikea, an ancestor brought to the island on the back of a whale when his canoe over-turned. Generation upon generation, a male heir succeeds to the title. The time has now come to appoint a new heir, but there's a problem: twins are born, a boy and a girl, but only the latter survives. Koro, the chief, refuses to acknowledge Pai as the new leader, convinced that the tribe's misfortunes began at her birth, thus Pai, despite loving Koro more than anything in the world, has to fight against both forebear and a thousand years of tradition to fulfil her destiny.
