Reversal of Fortune
Saturday, September 20th, 2008

At the press conference that he gave yesterday in the Kursaal before receiving the Donostia Award, Antonio Banderas recalled that the first time he came here to the Festival twenty-six years ago to present Laberinto de pasiones with Almodóvar, “I remember that I arrived with 350 pesetas in my pocket and that I hitched back. That was what my first San Sebastián Festival was like, so when Pedro Almodóvar, the very same director I came with that first time, presents me with the award it’s going to be a very touching moment”. He confessed that he was still thrilled about continuing to tell stories as an actor, although at the same time he intended to spend more time directing films. He acknowledged that he wasn’t a big fan of festivals, because he didn’t really believe in competition, “but I do believe in festivals as a meeting place for filmmakers from different countries, where you can talk, where there’s a market, and you can see work by people who wouldn’t otherwise have access to commercial film circuits, so I think that they do play an important role,” he added.
