The Official Section has opened with Chicogrande, a Western set against the backdrop of the Mexican Revolution. At a press conference after the screening of his film, the director Felipe Cazals stressed that loyalty was its focal point, and that this was a quality that was not very easy to find in Mexico nowadays, or anywhere for that matter.
He felt that his film offered a critical vision of the Revolution, that was quite different to the official versions and that the revolutionary cause was still utterly valid today: “there are forty million Mexicans who don’t have two meals a day, so Villa and Zapata are still right.”
