One from the heart
Saturday, September 25th, 2010

Chairman of the Official Jury Goran Paskaljevic is no stranger to San Sebastián: the Serbian director received the Fipresci Prize here in 1990 for Time of Miracles and won the
Special Jury Award in 2004 for Midwinter Night’s Dream. He says that he is impressed
by the great diversity of the films that are competing. Although this is clearly positive, it makes things a bit more complicated for the jury as they have to compare small films with big production, so it’s not going to be easy to choose. In his opinion what’s really important when judging a film is whether the actors sincerely convey its feeling, “I’m definitely going to decide on the basis of what my heart tells me.”

Considered to be one of the best directors in recent decades and one of the great figures
in Serbian cinema, he thinks that the film industry in his country is going through a difficult period. The economic crisis makes it hard to produce quality films so they focus
on trivial material that appeals to a large audience.

Decent films rarely run for long in cinemas before they are taken off and bootleg copies of films are also a big problem in his country: “you can buy a film on the black market for a Euro, three days after it’s been released.”

Despite all this he stresses there is another kind of cinema in the Balkans focusing on local contemporary society: “in the end top-quality always manage to get made somehow.”
