Javier Bardem and Julia Roberts were clearly delighted to have made their first film together at the press conference they gave after the screening of Eat Pray Love yesterday alongside director Ryan Murphy, fellow actor Richard Jenkins and producer Dede Gardner. Bardem stressed how extraordinary professional and fearless Julia Roberts was and how it had been a luxury working with her as she was not afraid to take risks. Richard Jenkins confirmed this and also agreed that it had been a fabulous experience working with her, while Ryan Murphy said she was so smart she was almost like a co-director.
When asked what criteria she followed when looking at a script Roberts herself claimed that she just reads a script and immediately has a feeling whether she wants to do it or not, and this is exactly what happened with Eat Pray Love. “Nothing makes me waver from that first gut feeling.”
She also claimed that she had never felt that she had been pigeonholed in her career and that she had always been able to work on projects that appealed to her in a wide variety of genres. She joked that the only thing she had left to do was a Spanish-speaking role.
As for receiving the Donostia award this year she confessed that it was an incredible honour and a privilege and that she was really nervous about it, although she was filled with gratitude about the prospect.
When Bardem was asked about his future plans he revealed that in his next project he would working with Terence Malick, something that he was really looking forward to.
