Jorge Drexler’s songs have been recorded by very different artists including Mercedes Sosa, Shakira, Omara Portuondo, Ana Belén and Neneh Cherry.
He started writing songs mid-1989 and in 1992 brought out his first CD, La luz que sabe robar. That same year he graduated as a Doctor from Uruguay’s Universidad de la República Oriental. In 2005 he landed an Academy Award for the song Al otro lado del río, from the film Diarios de motocicleta (The Motorcycle Diaries, 2004), the first song in Spanish ever to win an Oscar.
Since then, he has maintained close ties to all aspects of film; from the musical composition of songs and complete incidental film scores to acting a leading part. Among others, recent years have seen him accumulate 3 consecutive Grammy Award nominations, 6 Latin Grammy Award nominations and 2 consecutive Premio de la Música Española wins.
He composed the soundtrack and two new songs for James Ivory’s film The City of Your Final Destination (2009), starring Anthony Hopkins, Laura Linney and Charlotte Gainsbourg. In 2012 the multi-talented author once again caught us pleasantly off-guard with his part as leading actor in Daniel Burman’s La suerte en tus manos.
He has created an app for tablets and smartphones offering users the chance to directly participate in composing his songs. He is currently presenting a stage version of his show Mundo abisal and continues to work on the creative process of the project “n”.
