Elvis sighted in Argentina!
Thursday, September 27th, 2012
The Argentine director Armando Bo has a long career behind him in advertising and also co-wrote the script for Iñárritu’s Biutiful. His first feature El Último Elvis was premiered at Sundance and is now being screened here at San Sebastián in Horizontes Latinos.
Elvis Presley himself doesn’t appear in the film nor do we hear him sing. “Elvis” is Carlos Gutiérrez, who thinks he’s a reincarnation of the idol from Memphis.
The director explains that the film is about a lack of personality, insecurity and the desire to be someone else, and could just as easily have been The Last Messi or The Last Maradona. “Carlos really believes he’s Elvis and ends up doing what we all do a bit: protecting our little worlds and often being someone that we aren’t.”
Bo reveals that in real life the star of the film, John McInerny, is an architect from Río de la Plata who fronts an Elvis tribute band. He originally coached a big-name actor who was going to play the leading role and when the actor dropped out, he took his place.
