The hushed-up heist of the century
Saturday, September 29th, 2012

¡Atraco!, presented yesterday out of competition in the Official Section, tells the story of one of the most bizarre robberies committed in Madrid in the 1950s. Two men with Uruguayan passports were arrested and put in jail for robbing a jeweller’s in central Madrid after going to see a nurse they knew so she could take a look at the bullet wound that one of them had. Both criminals were later killed by the Guardia Civil after escaping from prison in highly unusual circumstances. At the press conference after the screening of the film, producer Pedro Costa revealed that a police inspector from that period had confessed that the case had been hushed up because the aim of the robbery had been to recover Eva Perón’s jewelry, which had been pawned to pay for the expenses of General Perón’s exile in Madrid. When Pedro Costa had told this story to director Eduard Cortés he thought it was fascinating, and that it had so many dramatic twists that it could be made into a comedy, a thriller or a melodrama. “I thought it was really stimulating to be able to make a film in which all these pieces fitted together.”
