Fiction with the rigor of a documentary
Saturday, September 28th, 2013

After working as an editor on films by directors such as Pablo Berger and Montxo Armendáriz, Fernando Franco has now made his debut as a feature-film director with La Herida, the story of a young woman with self-destructive tendencies who suffers from a condition known as Borderline Personality Disorder although she herself is unaware of this. Franco justified that he had tackled a film about an illness while avoiding any reference to it by claiming that it was an attempt not to betray the rigorous way he had built up its viewpoint. “If Ana, the main character, is unaware of her illness, and hasn’t been diagnosed as being ill and we aim to tell the story from her point of view, then it’s logical to omit any elements that she doesn’t personally refer to herself.”

Inspired by certain aspects of the Dardenne brothers’ work, the director reveals that he originally considered making La Herida as a documentary. However he later abandoned the idea as tackling the film as a documentary because this posed an ethical problem for him, as following around someone suffering from this kind of disorder would probably make it worse.
