The beach with no future meets the city with too much past
PRAIA DO FUTURO
Saturday, September 20th, 2014

Karim Aínouz, a Brazilian director who lives in Berlin, wanted to combine the Praia do Futuro with winter in Berlin: “I’m in love with Berlin and I wanted to film in the two places that are so dear to me and yet are such opposites. In the Beach of the Future there’s no future because people emigrate, while in Berlin with so much past, right now there’s a lot of future.”

The film tells the story of Donato, a lifeguard on a spectacular dangerous beach, who rescues a German tourist. The film has already come out in Brazil where it has been a big hit at the box office, although it has caused a bit of a stir among homophobic sectors of the public because of the way it questions masculinity in its treatment of the relationship of a male couple.
