Light and shade in rural Iceland
Monday, September 21st, 2015

The third film to be screened in the Official Section yesterday was a coming-of-age story about a teenager in a hostile environment in the North of Iceland where getting drunk and violence against women are very common. This is Rúnar Rúnarsson’s second feature film and it is based on his own experiences and of the people all around him. Although it takes place during the summer solstice, it shows an utterly hopeless environment with alcoholic adults and youngsters who are really lost. The director pointed out that, “I think it reflects a reality, although I have tried to put a bit of poetry into all this and create a kind of poetic realism. In this region of the country that’s how they live. The lack of light throughout the entire winter drives them to drink, and in summer when it never gets dark, they are so full of energy that they don’t know what to do, so they also get drunk".
