An admirer of flawed innovation
Thursday, September 24th, 2015

The critic Desirée de Fez is forming part of the New Directors Jury. She says that what she’s most interested in are filmmakers who take risks and try to find original models, not just in work by new directors but in any film. “I prefer an imperfect flawed film where you can see they aimed to do something innovative a thousand times more than a formally flawless film with a standard narrative model.”

She says that when she works on a film jury she tries to forget about her work as a critic so she doesn’t think about whether suchand- such a film may be easy or difficult for the audience. “The best thing is to let yourself be guided by your instinct and your emotions. From that moment on the decision that a jury comes to depends a great deal on whether these emotions are shared to a greater or lesser extent by all those of us who form part of it.”
