“OUR DECISIONS DIRECTLY AFFECT THE FUTURE OF THESE FILMS”
Saturday, September 30th, 2017

Cinematographer André Szankowski was in San Sebastian in 2010 to present Raúl Ruiz’s Misterios de Lisboa, and this year he’s back but as a member of the Official Section jury. A Brazilian who has settled in Portugal, Szankowski says that being chosen to judge films here is like being given an award by the Festival in recognition of his career. He’s also very aware that the jurors have a lot of responsibility, “because our decisions directly affect the future of these films and of the people working in them.”

Asked if he mainly looks at the photography in the films he’s judging, he said that when it’s well done he manages to forget about it, but when something isn’t right he can no longer enjoy the film as just another member of the audience.

As for his future plans, when he finishes here he’ll be going to Portugal to work with Valeria Sarmiento, Raúl Ruiz’s widow, on a prequel to Misterios de Lisboa.
