Sisters are doin’ it for themselves

“Directoras de fotografía” are a collective of female directors of photography who have come to San Sebastián to publicise the association that they have formed this year to raise the profile of their work. Beth Rourich explains that cinematography has always been considered to be a male profession so that for many years there have been very few female directors of photography. All the members of the collective agree that the main reason for this is that their job requires a capacity for leadership and a body of technical knowledge that the industry does not usually associate with women. The lack of role models also means that it is a bit more difficult to break into the profession because of the prejudices that still characterize certain sectors. They have set up a web site to provide a showcase for them to be able to present their work, and they also aim to build networks to provide information about their activity in order to try and foster equality in all the platforms that are linked with the audiovisual sector. Although there is still a lot of work to be done, the path that they are opening up means that the future for women in the sector is looking a lot brighter.
